Parking Spaces

ANALOG

September 1985

One morning when I walked into work through the parking lot, I noticed the pops and creaks that cars make when they cool down. It got me thinking about what the cars might be talking to each other about. Shortly after this story came out, I was at a con in Tulsa, talking to one of the workers about how science fiction was really stories about people, not about science or technology. Suddenly, I had to laugh and confess that my latest story didn't even have a person as the main character.
